What this is
We are building a dataset of actual solar generation from monitored systems across Scotland. When the sample is large enough to mean something, we will publish the first Scottish Solar Index — showing what solar panels produce in Scotland, not what models predict.
Why it matters
Every competitor sells opinions about Scottish solar. We intend to publish measurements.
The method
Anonymised generation data from Solar Care Club monitoring members, reported as kWh/kWp/yr by region, orientation, and system size.
Sample size, methodology, and limitations will be stated openly. No figure will be published that the sample does not support.
What does kWh/kWp/yr mean?
It is the number of kilowatt-hours a system generates in a year for every kilowatt-peak of panels installed. Because it is measured per kWp, it lets you compare a small terrace system with a large farmhouse array on equal terms.
Multiply the figure by your system size to estimate annual generation. Your installer's quote should include a performance estimate calculated using the MCS method, so you can check it against your own roof.
What affects how much a Scottish roof generates?
- Latitude. Northern areas get fewer winter daylight hours but long summer days.
- Orientation. South-facing roofs generate most; east and west roofs spread output across the morning and evening.
- Roof pitch. Steep traditional Scottish roofs can suit low winter sun.
- Shading. Chimneys, dormers, trees and neighbouring tenements can cut output, which optimisers or microinverters can help with.
- Temperature. Panels work more efficiently when cool, which helps in Scotland's climate.
- Exposure. Coastal and upland homes need fixings and panels suited to high winds and salt air.
What can I use until the Index is published?
Use the MCS performance estimate on your quote, compare it with our solar ROI calculator and read our system size guide. If two quotes for the same roof give very different estimates, ask each installer to explain their assumptions.
